A lighthearted twist on the traditional shibori dye, an ancient art of shape resist dyeing, these hand dyed linen pillows are crafted in Ottawa, Ontario. The brilliant fuchsia colour comes from Cochineal (pronounced “concha neil”) dye. This dye comes from an insect that feeds on the prickly pear cactus in Mexico, Peru, Chile and the Canary Islands. This dye is the only natural red dye approved by the FDA and is considered very sustainable.
Cochineal dye was first used by Aztecs as early as the 10th century for its brilliant red/pink/orange/purple hues and was second only to sliver in regards to Spanish Exports from the New World.
This dye is currently enjoying a revival in textiles due to its ethical sources and its excellent light and wash fastness.
